SNAP! This is weird, yesterday in going through the many files in my computer i came across this image that i had saved a while ago! i wish i could remember where. but it got me thinking about inspiration too and since then i have been asking myself that same question. so far i came up with friends who follow through and produce something! Wish I could turn that inspiration into my own energy for doing stuff..
Well anyway that was a lengthy response. In short, my answer is creative friends and uh, old photographs.
I completely agree with this quote! I think real originality is very rare and that most of the time we're inspired by everything around us and just reuse it our own different ways. (Hope it makes sense). Nowadays it feels like people are all about being original (meaning quite often feeling superior to others) while all we should be concerned about is being ourselves, feeling comfortable... etc etc... Hopefully that doesn't too cheesy :)
i think stealing is too harsh a word, but i agree with jarmusch that nothing is original anymore given the (celebrated) fluidity of ideas nowadays. what inspires me is how people define themselves in knowing that their work is not just their own, but a constant intellectual/creative exchange with the world.
My God, what a fantastic quote. It's funny you posted this, because I just started my own blog, and it's been a constant struggle for me in feeling okay about re-blogging. The way I started to rest into it was to comment about it. I don't just repost, I share my thoughts on it, as you did. It's so true though. Like what you like and be proud of it. Pass it on. Keep the inspiration alive. If no one passed things along, they would die out.
I've always thought that academia and literary criticism consisted of acknowledged thievery (with references). I sometimes get the best ideas from the most unusual places, that don't necessarily have anything to do with what I'm writing about. Sometimes all you need is one sentence.
I think inspiration comes from everyday life, letting things and people to be able to influence your life. I don't think it’s stealing, just re-interpreting and adjusting to your own style. Taking things to a personal new level. I love this quote and I love this blog! xo
I've read that before and thought it was a great piece of advice. Inspiration I take - aside from movies, books, music and the like - is again like Soda says from creative friends and stuff I see that should at least be noted somewhere.
s: oh my, that's a strange coincidence! i really like the aesthetic of that image. and yes, creative friends are inspiring - like you!
adeline: no, not cheesy at all :) it's true that originality has become a false commodity when, in fact, it is now impossible to be completely original. it should be about responding to what you find personally interesting.
joanne: you put it so eloquently. and there does need to be an awareness of the exchange and borrowing of ideas that does not result in plagiarism and directly "stealing" other people's work/identity.
ella: tis!
jodi: glad you like it.
audrey: always nice to meet a new blogger :) i like your method of re-blogging by offering your own slant and interpretation - it keep the inspiration alive, but provides new approaches.
hila: yes, i have experienced a similar thing where something completely unrelated feeds into my work. academia = acknowledged thievery sometimes accompanied by ruthless critique and wankery :)
cinta/sepi/sayu: thank you!
eliza: thanks and glad you liked the quote!
deb: yes - adapting things to one's personal style. a perfect way of putting it!
camille: i think he would love to be referred to as a jesus-figure!
tristan: yes, you can see it in the mini-illustrations that portray snapshots of your day-to-day life.
This is an excellent quote. I think I get my inspiration from simply living. Even the mundane activities of everyday life can be very entertaining and inspiring.
i don't think he means "creative thievery", maybe rather in the sense of recombination. i actually believe that all that is left for the postmodern creative is to play with references and reinterpret fragments.
I love this qoute. I think aobut this all the time, especially with the internet, scanning constantly. Whats cool? whats happening, how do I fit in? I know who I am and what I like.I study detail and it gets put away and pulled up in the perfect moments. There is nothing better than being in creativity and loosing your self in the rich, free, detailed expression. The beautiful part is to trust what you see as beauty rather than going for what appears to be cool. Love all of it! thank you, I might have to steal that!!!!!
I saw this printed out by someone who has no problem with creative "borrowing". I think it is a wretched quote that only breeds more stagnation in art and creation. That is our problem with art today, so many copy the style or ideas created in the metal factory of someone else because they can. I think inspiration and thievery has such a thin stringed line between the two. I get my inspiration from nature, the memories of being captivated by my mom's medical textbooks and subversive ideals and religious idolatryMy apologies for babbling on.You have a really interesting blog!
Nicomi: No need to apologise - I loved reading your response. I completely agree with what you've said about creative "borrowing" - especially in the context of the internet where people have no problem with representing the work of other people as their own. Thank you for adding your two cents!
