A TINGE

i can't remember from where i found this quote or who said it (if you know, please tell me), but i like the truthfulness and the resonance of the sentiment. some songs and albums have such an amazing capacity to take me back in time, to places, people, images and moments long hidden in the recesses of my memories. my first year of university is marked by doves' lost souls, and oasis' (what's the story) morning glory? always reminds me of high school. ryan adams forever, but particularly when i am butterflies-in-the-stomach smitten. at the moment, i can't get enough of beirut's the rip tide and st. vincent's strange mercy.

what are you listening to currently?

+ good tunes from watercolours live on 95b fm
+ i love the new primoeza collection
+ a film that everyone should see
+ a lovely post on collecting from anne louise likes.

edit: the quote is from simon reynolds via here. thanks camila!
replies:

koey: yes, hers is one of the most wonderfully expressive faces ever captured on cinema. and thank you :)

that kate: thanks lovely! expect a long overdue email soon.

megan taylor: i didn't write my thesis on anna karina (although that would have been a very good idea) - i just like any excuse to indulge in some karina magic. your undergrad thesis sounds really interesting - bardot's performance in le mepris is one of her best.

alyce, aliya, ella, vintageveggie, mandy, amy, louise, black-eyed angel, k., tana, piere, saer, primoeza, camila faria, anne, cara edwards, amanda jane, epe, amy and kristina: thank you for your kind words. i truly appreciate them.

sundari: the "what next" question is a scary one! i am working at an art gallery at the moment while i wait for my results and decompress my head a bit.

enia: so there is life on the other side? :)

tristan: merci, merci! i am still getting accustomed to "bob's" absence. ah yes, anna is very mesmerising in that scene...i can lend you the film if you would like. and thank you for the link - so good!

size too small: relieved and in a mild state of shock that it's actually been submitted!

elias: thanks. i am flattered that you would like to read it.

jodeska: i am always trying to work more interpretive dance into my daily life (much to the amusement of those around me).

nancy baric:
well, i have to wait a few month to get my results and then officially graduate. after all that, and if all goes well, i can use the title doctor.

  2. oh wow. that is a great quote. I need to write it down. that quote also resonates with me. such music can take me back to a moment, whether it be good or bad. I find it so amazing how just listening to a song can conjure up not just a memory, but a feeling, the same feeling as if I am back on that same particular period or time in my life. maybe that's why I have such a love for music. I notice that not everyone feels this way.

and honestly lately I haven't been listening to any music (catching up on podcasts). and when I always have to think of a song, my mind draws a blank but whenever I listen to stellastar's love and longing, I get this yearning whenever I listen to it. and every fall whenever I listen to sea wolf's leaves in the river, I am taken back to 2 years ago right before fall and just the happiness I felt. (sorry for hijacking your comments)

  3. Danica, this quote is from the british journalist and music critic Simon Reynolds. I read it in this article, in Russh Magazine: http://www.russhmagazine.com/arts-music/music/2011/05/06/the-music-and-the-misery/

  4. This quote is beautiful. To me, good music is something which can dig out the emotion and feeling from the past, and give me a sense of sadness.

I am currently listening to Death is the Road to Awe, A Rush Of Blood To The Head and What The Water Gave Me.

  5. I love that quote, it is so so true! Sometimes I hear a song and I'm back at a certain time or a certain feeling.
And by the way, the film sounds really good. Have you seen it yet?

  6. I've been listening to M83, the Radio Dept, and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. They all have a dreamy/ nostalgic sound to them to begin with. I love them. They kind of remind me of what a modern John Hughes soundtrack might sound like.

  13. I found the quote :)!!! it belongs to Simon Reynolds (he wrote a book Energy Flash: A Journey Through Rave and Dance Culture).

as it`s autumn here i`m listening to something that mantles you with warmth of the sounds, good instrumental melodies like 'Old Boston', i discovered later some new lovely songs (like Tamara Kaboutchek and her Deep Inside The Mind and Full Moon Doll)

  17. Although I think this is a good quote (and Simon Reynolds a great author on music for that matter), I can't completely agree with it. For me, a song can totally conjur up images/feelings but they can be both happy and sad. They don't have that tinge for me.
I have to say that I find it unpleasant at times when I am reminded of sad times listening to music and the minute I hear that song / album / band I'll be taken back to that moment. It sucks cause I just wanna enjoy the beautiful music but sometimes it just makes me feel super sad. To be honest, I'm mostly talking about Teen Dream by Beach House (and their former albums to but to a lesser extent). I love that album so so much but I am always reminded of this feeling of missing someone super badly last year.

Anyway, this comment is perhaps a little too personal (though vague enough) so I will shut up now.

PS: lately I've been enjoying Veronica Falls' debut (sooo good!!!), Big Troubles, Mazes, Friends and Dominant Legs.
And I would not recommend Girls' latest. Whatever any websites with influence out there say: it's just reallyyyy boring. Sorry Girls.

(ok comment done now, for real. Sorry!)

  18. Lovely quote, great images.

I've been into Mumford & Sons but was just listening to Elastica on the way out of town and telling my husband that Brit Pop will always own my heart.

Music is incredibly powerful. I have such clear associations when I listen to specific songs. It's beautiful and sad at the same time.

  19. Love this quote. I've been listening to Phosphorescent (sp?), Diego Garcia, and dying to hear the rest of the album from lana del rey. I heard the single, video games, on NPR and it's soooo crazy beautiful, like Cat Power but a little more hopeful.

  21. Hello lovely:

This quote is very touching right now. I think I am going through a phase - or maybe its the seasonal shift that's making me a little off kilter. Anyway, I am way late in responding to this post - but recently I was given a bunch of music - and rather impressedly { i know that's not a word } I had never heard a single artist on it before. And I loved near every song.

It made me excited yet also a little blue. Blue because it made me think of all the great music out there that I am missing..silly of me I know.

Anyways, some of the stuff on there that I liked you possibly already know. You're ocular palette being what it is!

    Check these out:

    Caribbean Bird { part 1 } - Johnny Whitley
Heimdalsgate like a Promethean Curse - Of Montreal
    Time Bomb - The Format
    Credible Threats - The One

I also think you might enjoy the storytelling poetic nature of The Mountain Goats. Lots of new music for me of late!

    x
