i was first introduced to miranda july when i watched her debut feature, me and you and everyone we know, at the cinema. i can remember anticipating that i would enjoy the film, but i really didn't. that being said i didn't entirely write off miss july: i thoroughly enjoyed her short story collection, no one belongs here more than you, as well as her creative output in general (the pillowcases for third drawer down, her videos and perceptive thoughts on creativity). so when i saw the trailer for the future i was ready to go along for the ride.
i think i got one minute in with paw paw the cat's decidedly creepy voice-over (which i presume is voiced by july herself) and i knew that the journey was going to be somewhat bumpy.
but allow me to start on a positive note: she wears some very lovely frocks in the film and the apartment that she shares with hamish linklater's character has a great shabby chic feel. beyond that i can't say i was terribly fussed - a fact that i found quite sad and disappointing because i wanted to love the film. now, i appreciate magic realism and i have no problem with animals communicating in cinema (arthur the dog in beginners is my current favourite), but everything is so studied and contrived in the future that it makes for painful viewing. instilling the viewer with a self-conscious sense of discomfort is quite obviously at the heart of july's film, with its focus on characters struggling to make sense of the everyday, but while it may be a fine concept it doesn't amount to a great filmic experience.
interestingly, the most recent issue of lula featured an interview with july in which she discussed the philosophy behind the film and its attempt to cinematically realise creative frustration: "i guess what i hoped was, can i, in this short hour and a half time create just that tension and then the feeling of breakthrough." the tension is definitely there, but not necessarily the breakthrough. there is also some very awkward dancing and, well, just plain awkwardness that gestures towards human disconnection and interpersonal alienation.
i was thinking about why it is that july's creative impulses, which work so beautifully in other forms, do not translate to cinema (for me at least). perhaps it is because as readers and viewers of art we are given room for our own imaginations and interpretations - an aspect that can be hindered with the all-absorbing quality of cinema.
if there is something good to come from the film, other than sartorial and interior design tips, it is the excellent the future website that has a function which can predict your future. mine read as follows:

you give into distraction as if it is a murderer. you lay there, waiting to be killed. today: fight for your life.
ok, miranda, i will.
replies
tc and aloÿse: yes, i agree.

I am still waiting to watch this. I will let you know my thoughts. I understand what you are saying, but in a way I like the awkwardness she creates in her previous work although some parts of Me you and everyone we know is confused, will you send me your address via email, I want to send you something
RépondreSupprimerI agree with you. I want to like her, and I too can't seem to get over the awkwardness I FEEL watching her. And I never enjoy creepy talking animals...
RépondreSupprimermmm i didn't have fun watching her first film at all, but did enjoy her book of short stories like you.. i find her a little bit exhausting.
RépondreSupprimerI'm so happy to find someone else that watched this movie. My husband refused to sit through it. I too am a fan of Miss July but this film also missed the mark for me. I don't mind awkwardness (that's actually what it is about her that I connect with) however it was the feeling of despair from these characters that made me uncomfortable. I couldn't relate to this couple because they didn't appear to have "real" problems leaving the plot kind of flat. I also couldn't stop noticing how underweight Miranda is. eat a hot fudge sundae.
RépondreSupprimerI liked her book of short stories and I too had registered for futures! They crack me up every week.
very thoughtful & insightful review! this film is on my list to see. just from the photos & trailer alone, i know that i will love the attire & apartment. after reading this, however, i am a little leery of the film itself. i saw me & you & everyone we know & had mixed feelings about it, but i do still love miranda. we shall see how this film rates...
RépondreSupprimerthanks for the review!!
Intriguing review! I always thought I should watch Me and You and Everyone... again to see if I was being too harsh on it. Or give it another shot. I'd heard this was better, but yeah, from what you say, it might suffer from the same sense of precociousness! I still look forward to seeing it though!
RépondreSupprimerI clicked on The Future website and it said to me, "I don't care if you're straight, gay, lesbian or whatever: lesbianism will come into your life this week." Okay...
oh that's a shame. i know what you mean exactly about wanting to love a film.
RépondreSupprimerwithout that breakthrough this one does sound disappointing.
the predictions are fun.
"... your inability to care for yourself does not bode well. See to it."
'kay.
i don't know much about miranda july apart from me you and everyone we know and yeah.. ummm i have to agree with you i just didn't enjoy it as much as i wanted to.
RépondreSupprimeri saw the future trailer just now and somewhat it doesn't seem very appealing to me either. yes, that paw paw bit in the trailer just creeps me out.
i should give it a go checking out her short stories though.
I`m not familiar with her work. The only thing I can tell is that she makes an impression of someone hilarious, un petit peu drole et may be a bit strange.
RépondreSupprimer...is now !
RépondreSupprimergreat inspiration! love the first pic!
RépondreSupprimerthanks for sharing!

I can totally relate to your words about "me and you" - I wanted to like and enjoy it so much and just couldn't (and must admit I was disappointed of MYSELF rather than anything else!!)
RépondreSupprimerDidn't know she had published a book - immediately ordered a copy from the library.
I would absolutely watch this, if only for the visual treat of it.
waiting for it to arrive in theatres here...
RépondreSupprimerThe images. Perfect! Love the short hair
RépondreSupprimersending you happy spells

I think July plays with the fact that people think everything is awkward funny and beautiful. For me everything she makes is to provoke that in the viewers. That beeing said, I don't like feeling awkward so, i didn't enjoy AT ALL the film. I recognize in her the talent but this film was painful.
RépondreSupprimerHowever I enjoy all the concepts an problematics she propose in her filmography, specially "you favorite person in the world".
She's a contemporary artist. That's undeniable.
Happy Holidays!!

Thanks for the oracle. It gave me a nice advice :)
RépondreSupprimerDid you know that Mike Mills (Beginners Director) and Miranda July are husband and wife. I've just found out like a couple of months ago when I got to see both movies. I thought it was an interesting fact to share.
I also loved Arthur the dog.
Merry Christmas :)
